Chittering Echidna Watch
Echidnas are fascinating animals. The female is an egg laying mammal (feeds its puggle on milk) who leads a train of males around for up to three weeks before she indicates that she is ready to receive an invitation to party, at which time the gentlemen dig a trench around her, then take turns as sumo wrestlers to shove each other out of the trench. Last man standing does the deed with his four headed penis. No kidding!
If you happen to see one of these interesting creatures around our area, the Chittering Landcare Centre is doing an “Echidna Watch” to establish a basic understanding of the numbers of animals wandering around.
Please contact Chittering Landcare and let us know where and when you observed Australia’s answer to the hedgehog.
